Brasilia is an interesting city because it was totally planned by the famous Oscar Niemeyer (communist, atheist, brilliant, still alive at 100 years of age! Actually he just got married!! Alive and kicking :)).

The idea was to move the capital from Rio to the center of the country to foster development in that more remote area. The city was built under the president Juscelino Kubitschek, who was a visionary (also built many highways in the country and fomented industrialization, making Brazil leave its agrarian roots to become more industrial). In 1960, Kubitschek gave the city to the country. It soon received tons of government workers and entrepeneurs who saw in it a chance to make money. These new families needed supermarkets, stores, restaurants, service companies, etc.

The architecture is now a bit dated but it still is very interesting and different. Check out the photos (unfortunately we can not post more than 5).
