Che Lagarto – Colonia Oct 10, 2016
Che Lagarto – Colonia, was the first hostel we came along on the rainy day, and luckily enough, they had an empty room for us. Sometimes while traveling you get into this weather systems that drop rain for a week or more and as far as I am concern, the best move is to keep moving away from it… So checking the weather in Buenos Aires, we figure it out that the best direction could be towards Uruguay, so first thing in the morning we got some coffee and jumped on the first ferry over to Colonia.

This city has nice historical part of town and old walls and it is a place where all ferry’s stop, so it was logical for us to stay there for a day and see what’s that all about. Rain was still falling every 10 minutes or so and we simply asked for the closest place to go. One guy suggested Che which is literally two blocks away from ferry and three blocks from bus station. I heard about Lagarto before because this is a chain of hostels all over South America so it should be good. This Che is in old colonial one story building, with addition in the back yard.

We got into private room with fire-place and it was pretty specious. Negative thing is that the door to the room is right next to the area where all people sit and eat and relax, and the door is partially glass, so there is no much “privacy” if you don’t put curtain on. And that curtain is on the weak side… Bed was alright, queen size fairly good, but there was only one plug for power. WiFi is not great, but you can get it most of the time.

Whole place was kind of wet in the sense of wetness and water being all around and maybe a bit on moldy side. They do offer the breakfast which is classic for Argentina and it looks like Uruguay too… It is lots of strong coffee, bread with dulce de leche and that’s about it 

Private rooms don’t have bathrooms (which is strange) but there is pretty large area that is made into bathrooms and showers and it is fairly clean and well made. Hot water is good and plentiful. Kitchen is small and not well quipped. They are missing all kinds of things, kind of trying to discourage anyone who wants to do any cooking… They don’t even have cups or spoons for the breakfast… -Anyway, for food options you should explore the town which has plethora of small and bigger restaurants (as every touristic place). The best one that I found was kind of “bohemian restaurant”, next to the church on the old square, with fantastic food options and great live music.

Hostel staff is a bit confused and they do not speak much English. I did not see any security, but there is only one door to get in and town looks very peaceful.

Anyway, great location to transportation and only 4-5 blocks from the all city attractions. It is alright solution but maybe you can find better hostel in town.
