Very photogenic, great relaxing walk from castle to Montreaux Aug 28, 2014
We were in Geneva with our then 9-year old boy-girl twins, and I decided to bring them on a day trip to one of the most photogenic "castles" in the world. The Chateau de Chilllon is an easy train ride from Geneva (train to Montreaux Station, Veytaux Chillon). From there, you can walk 4 km along the lakefront towards the castle. However, we opted to take the easy bus ride "ligne N° 201" from in front of the Montreux station to Chillon.

I have seen many pictures of this Chateau and when we got there, it did not disappoint in giving me some of the best pictures of my kids in Europe. The "castle" is situated strategically on Lake Geneva and has a great backdrop of the mountains. It has a rich history with the oldest dating back to 1150 during the occupation of the Dukes of Savoy. It was used as a fortress, as a dungeon and it is amazing that it is still in such a fairly good condition.

When inside and looking out through the dungeon windows, I just tried to imagine how the prisoners must have felt like. It must have been cold during the winter...the entrance to this castle (as of 2014) is just about CHF 12 and half for kids who are 10-16. It is worth a visit specially if you love castles like me. The place fires up my imagination.

But outside, walk out to the water and take amazing photographs of the castle. There was a little "cove" where we saw a man fishing, and we walked out to the "little islet made of stepping stones/rocks" , disturbing his "fishing", haha...Since it was warm, we also saw that the man's little kids were also getting wet in the water (with his wife waiting while he was fishing).

Going back to the Montreaux station, we decided to walk the 4 kms which takes less than an hour and we truly enjoyed it. Along the way, we saw many beautiful flowers and artistic decor like a motorcycle (I think it was a Vespa) turned into a flower pot, haha...the twins also saw a little ice cream shop and we had a stop for a little sweet snack. We also passed by a statue of the late Freddie Mercury of the band "Queen" (nearer the station) and we had a great time just watching the other people enjoying the area.

Chateau de Chillon is not just all about the "castle" or structure, but about feeling how life was and how it is now along this part of Lake Geneva. If the weather is perfect (as during the time we visited in June), you would enjoy the area as much as we did. More great memories.

It's really all about the location. Everything else is FORGETTABLE! Sep 18, 2013
Most travel books on Switzerland have the yodelling or the Alps or a picture of a fat cow grazing the pastures. Only a few have this amazing castle with the mountains in the background, and the setting sun. But that view alone would seduce you into visiting Switzerland. And that castle, ladies and gentlemen, is the Chateau de Chillon.

As far as location goes, it's dreamier than a Bollywood love story - the structure, the silent Lake Geneva, those magnificent Alps, you just can't go wrong with it. But, you don't have to, as there's plenty wrong once you're inside...

Now I could go on about the facts of this place, but that's what our Wikipedia is for (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chateau_de_chillon). But overall, my issue with this place was that it wasn't really as exciting or as informative as other castles I've been to. Almost felt 'misled' after the amazing feel as you enter.

All the hallmarks of a touristy castle are there - the walk along the ramparts, the wine cellars, the dining rooms, the token bedrooms with the "old style" bed with lighting and displays, everything.... but something just felt missing. Basically I wouldn't recommend this attraction to folks - see it from the outside and ADMIRE it. Don't be arsed walking in!

There is something to be said about a castle. While its not easy to explan our fascination with them, we cannot deny our natural draw to them. Chateau de Chillon is a castle that does not fail to disappoint those drawn to it.

Its easy to dismiss its splendor and size based on the photos printed in most travel guides. But do not be fooled, Chateau de Chillon is every bit as large and impressive as you would hope.

Chateau de Chillon is in Montreaux, Switzerland on a small rocky island in Lake Leman. But due to the size of the chateau, you'll be hard-pressed to actually see any of that island. Don't worry, you won't need a boat to get to the chateau. Even though it rests on its own island, it is only a matter of feet from the shore.

When you buy your ticket, you are given a map of the castle that also details what each room was used for. The tours are self guided, so you can go at your own pace. The castle itself is quite large, so it will take you a couple of hours to complete the tour.

Every room is accessible. There are a number of artifacts in the rooms. They aren't full but not barren either. In some rooms that have scale models of the castle so you can get a eagle eye view of the impressive architecture.

When exploring the upper floors and walkways, you can't help but feel that you are a guard on patrol. It is enough to bring out the fantasy lover in you.

Overall, the Chateau de Chillon is a great experience. Its fairly cheap and will keep you entertained for a couple of hours. If you are taking a train pass Montreaux, its definitely worth a couple hour detour. Drop your bags off in a train locker, catch a bus down the coast a couple miles, and enjoy one of Switzerland's famous sites.

It was Byron who carved into the Temple of Poseidon ... not the perfect tourist.

I had a great day there - oh - June 2005. There's some graffitti drawn by, of all people, Byron in the dungeon. Love the photos!
