This is my favorite place in France. For anyone with a sense of history it is situated in a pristine location about 300 meters from where the Rangers assaulted the cliffs to destroy the German artillery on D-Day. Significantly, this artillery was strategically placed and could range both Omaha and Utah Beaches. The task fell to Lt. Col. James Rudder's 2nd Ranger Battalion and involved 3 Companies (D, E, and F) of the battalion who scaled the heights. The rangers took the cliffs, destroyed the guns and then, cut off and separated from the main effort, held against repeated German counterattacks until reinforcements arrived. Their courage came at a price. Out of 225 men, less then one hundred were left standing when the Ranger's 5th Battalion arrived to relieve them.

After a nice country breakfast at the Chateau St Pierre it's just a short walk to the battlements where, in the peaceful early morning, you can almost hear the echo of MG-42 machine guns and M1 rifles...the cries of the wounded and the shouts of men striving against all odds to seize and hold the formidable bastion that was Point du Hoc.
