Chata pod Rysmi Vysoke Tatry Reviews
my favourite hut in the Tatras Oct 10, 2006
This place is very basic. The bedroom is a 14-bed dorm, if it's full you'll have to sleep in the dining room on the ground or a bench (but as it's so remote, they'll never turn you away). There is no bathroom, there is water outside but it's icy cold. The toilet is a hole in the ground a couple of meters away. We always try to limit our beer intake 'cause you don't want to have to go there in the middle of the night.
But noone goes hiking for luxuries. It's the location and the hospitality of the staff that make this place great. There's only a handful of meals on the menu, but they all taste great. I especially love the fried cheese with baked potatoes. The dining room is decorated with Buddhist prayer flags, communist memorabilia and photos of the hut after avalanches.
The hut is only open from mid-june to late october, same as the trail that leads there. You are allowed to cross from/to Poland at the top of Mt. Rysy in july, august and september only.
There is no mobile reception, but they do have a radio for emergencies. At the start of the trail up to Rysy, beyond Popradske pleso, is a little cabin with supplies you can carry up to the hut. I took a carton of milk once as a symbolic gesture, but if you carry up a considerable amount, they will give you free tea. Beware that you must wear proper hiking boots to take this trail.
