Charters Towers Vacation Guide
Charters Towers is an old gold mining town, made famous in the late 1800's after Jupiter Mosman discovered a gold nugget on the top of Towers Hill. Once the gold rush kicked in, the city was the largest in Queensland outside of Brisbane, topping 30,000 people. Nowadays, with the gold rush long since passed, the remaining 8,000 people are a proud bunch and are more than happy to share stories of history and dreams past.
A quiet town in its own right, Charters Towers sits around 140km southwest inland of Townsville, at around a 330m elevation that provides a reduced temperature and humidity from its nearby neighbour. The friendly atmosphere is accompanied by a rich history and beautiful architecture that was a result of the lavish income presented by the gold mining.
Back in the day, Charters Towers was called "The World", because it was said that you could get anything you wanted here, so why go anywhere else? Although that might not be the case now, Charters Towers still contains enough charm from days past to entertain those of all ages.

a map and some photos of my slightly unplanned trip around the world. The map outlines the general route I took, not counting the backtracking and double visits.

I woke up a little grumpy after barely sleeping. John decided to get out of bed at 2am to stoke the fire and bang doors and make coffee and play in a marching band and run a jackhammer. Okay maybe it wasn’t that bad. Luckily the farm stay family had a lot of fun in store for us. We loaded onto th…
