It is a quick trip on the interstate from Milton past towns like Hurricane and Nitro, crossing the Kanawha, and into Charleston, the capital of West Virginia. The capitol dome looms over the city, covered with gold.
Spend a peaceful moment under the trees admiring the river from the capitol steps. You might want to do this on a Saturday or Sunday, as parking is scarce on weekdays.
With a population of 200,000, this is going to be your best chance for a big city in West Virginia.

In my quest to explore the country and to stay off of interstates whenever possible, I decided to drive into West Virginia and see some of the state. What a mistake that was! My old non turbo Ford diesel did not like this decision at all. The hills I encountered crossing over the Appalachian mountains made the old truck grunt. It was a long tough day and when I found the Elks Lodge in Charlston, I said, OH Crap. It was on top a hill with a sharp hairpin turn in the middle of the steep drivewa…

It started innocently enough; I visited Juneau, Alaska in June 1993 and explored the State Capitol building. A few months later, It was Montgomery, Alabama's. In the course of time, it became a hobby. Near the end it became a bit of an obsession. Then, in August of 2006, I visited my 50th US State Capitol building in Pierre, SD. (Yeh!)
Yes, I know, I'm a geography nerd....
