Attention: Before heading up to Mount Charleston, check the weather forecast - once in December we had to turn back half way to the mountain as it started snowing heavily and officials closed the roads. Springtime there may be some heavy floods. Its a lot cooler up in the mountains even in the summertime, winters can be really freezing.

Mount Charleston (11 000 ft) is a nice day trip destination even if you have no special plans for activities. In the summertime Mount Charleston gives you a break from the desert killer heat and in the winter you'll probably have snow, too. It's a good idea to take your camera and binoculars, the ride up is beautiful with pine trees lining the road and when you reach higher areas, scenery is breathtaking. You could spot some wildlife, too. If you plan to hike, climb, bike, ski etc. remember appropriate gear.

Visiting summertime? Start your day early, visit the grocery store on your way and buy picnic lunch items to enjoy outdoors. Last time we visited summertime we stopped at the Mt. Charleston Lodge to buy some refreshments and there were ladies from the Indian reservation selling some beautiful, hand made jewelry and crafts. Nice souvenirs or mementos!
