CARTA is the public transportation authority for Charleston. CARTA operates a convenient service called DASH to provide transportation around the historic downtown area. DASH routes are operated with busses decorated to look like trolleys (trams). At this writing the fare is $1.25 or $4.00 for a one-day pass.

There are three DASH loop routes:

210 - Aquarium/College of Charleston

211 - Meeting Street/King Street (including service to the Battery)

212 - Market Street/Waterfront

Visitors to Charleston can use the DASH buses to quickly get around the historic area. You can park all day at the Visitors Center and pick up DASH service from there.

DASH does not operate on major holdiays (New Year’s Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day).

I've found that when waiting at a bus stop along the route, you have to make sure the driver of an approaching bus sees you and knows you want to board.
