Chaoyang Park West Jul 02, 2011
For some reason the place reminds me of a quiet suburb in some non-descript European country; particularly the strip lying between Chaoyang Park West Road and the Agricultural Exhibition Hall, it has a quiet, self-reflective quality, particularly in the evening, that is so rare in this city of 20 million.

If you're traveling to Beijing when the weather is good, make sure to spend an evening at Chaoyang Park (north Beijing, Chaoyang District). This unique outside and inside entertainment area adjoins a large pond. On any summer night, you can soak up the sounds of great live bands and nightclubs featuring international music.

The action is on the south and west sides of the pond. As Portia wisely noted in one of the comments, you probably want to enter at the south or west gate to prevent a lot of extra walking.

I sat on the west side for about two hours at an outdoor bar/cafe listening to an acoustic guitar duo perform 60's and 70's songs (The Beatles, The Eagles, Herman's Hermits, etc.). Everyone (a 90% Chinese audience) sang along in English.

The park also offers paddle boats, shopping and a wide variety of restaurants. As one of the Beatles' lyrics says, "A splendid time is guaranteed for all!" :-D

We felt not to be able to arrive at the Chaoyang Park. We arrived until Hard Rock Cafe, we had supper there and already from return to the hotel, very we were tired.

This park is huge. Bigger than the Summer Palace. So you want to make sure you get to the entrance closed to where you want to go or you will have a long walk.

I know, Chaoyang Park isn’t a major tourist attraction in Beijing.  We’d already done the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, the Zoo is planned for tomorrow, and the Summer Palace just seems…Chaoyang Park isn’t a major tourist attraction in Beijing.   We’d already done the Great Wall and the Forbidden…
