Hat Yai is part of the southern states of thailand that are included in the governments 'Places NOT to go' list. This is because these states have a separtist terrorist group that regularly set off bombs. We assumed that we would only need to be here for around half an hour before getting on a bus into Malaysia, however we arrived and were told that this was not possible and so we had to STAY THE NIGHT... dududurrrrr !! The Macdonalds was protected by armed guards and our hostel looked more l...

People i met here who contributed to, and improved my trip: Julia (Russia)
Our trusty Lonely Planet informed us that the train station in Sungai Kolok was only a few hundred metres from the immigration office, so once stamped into Thailand we foolishly declined the offer of a tuk tuk ride and kept our money in our pockets. 20 minutes later with sweat dripping off us and swearing that i was going to start a bonfire with my trusty guide book, the train station was reached!

Ban Khao,(also spelt Ban Khaw, it is fairly typical in Thailand to see two or three spellings for a place!)
This is the Lake District of Thailand, mostly only visited by Malayan tourists on day trips. lotus flowers are gorgeous but only open in the morning. Long boat trips may be taken from Thali Noi, village.
Patthalung train station is about 30 kms away.
It's a lovely area although places to stay are scarce.
