New Year's Eve, 2007. Before heading back to Bangkok for fireworks, I had 2 awesome side trips to complete near Kanchanaburi: A hike up the gorgeous 7-tiered Erawan waterfall, and a trip to pet real live tigers at the Tiger Temple.
Erawan Waterfall
Erawan is a series of waterfalls winding its way downhill in the midst of tropical forest. As you climb uphill, you make your way past multiple "tiers" of cascades and waterfalls tumbling into gorgeous blue green pools. You can swim in...

The Bridge over the river Kwai -- Kanchanaburi, Thailand. The round shaped truss spans are the originals; the two trapezoidal replacements were supplied as war reparations from Japan.

This famous bridge is about 4km (3miles) north from downtown Kanchanaburi, crossing the Kwai Yai river. It was brought from Java by the Japanese Army and was assembled at the River Kwai by the prisoners. Bombed several times in 1945, it was rebuilt after the war. The curved spans of the bridge are the original sections. An estimated 16,000 war prisoners and 49,000 forcibly recruited laborers died during the construction of the bridge and the Death Railway that leads to Burma.

Not much sleep doesn't do Faye any good. Especially when I had to get up at 6.30 in the morning. But it was all well worth it. What a day. First was a visit to the bridge over the River Kwai, I went under it, walked on it and went to a museum all about it. Me and my dad walked along the bridge, along with many others all taking photos and and carefully avoiding each other on what seemed like a rickity old railway track. It was when the train came along, bla...

We decided to head to the Erawan Water Falls today and couldn't face the prospect of the local bus chugging along or being on some awful organised tour so we decided to hire a motorbike. Adam had to leave his passport as security for the bike which is always a bit worrying but it was only 200 baht for the day so we did it anyway. The bike was not the best we've had with no working speedo or fuel guage which makes it a bit of a lottery especially when we had 65km each way to the falls. We...

We had booked this tour from New Zealand, and although we really liked being in this area. It was OK, but we felt a bit rushed at times. We hadn't realised we didn't have anything for the second day - as you stay over and apparently we were suppose to book something (banana boat tour or an elephant ride). We really should have only did the one day tour, but we weren't aware. All well.We visited the watr cemetary and museum first, felt a bit rushed as we really didn't get enough time to have a...

Our journey out of Bangkok ended suddenly a few kilometres out of Ayuthaya, where the driver of our bus declared, "Get off now, we're here!!" Actually we weren't there and even though in Bangkok you have to shoo the Tuk Tuk drivers away here you have the oposite problem, there isn't a blimin Tuk Tuk driver to be seen!! Never fear, after about quarter of an hour a tour guide showing a group around the ruins nearby took pity on us and called his friend who had a Tuk Tuk.&n...

Leaving Bangkok made me nervous. I don't buy this line of thinking that says Bangkok isn't the 'real Asia', cos it's real enough for those millions of people who live in the city - they're not there for my benefit. But somehow the trip didn't seem real until I left the place.Left my room, bought some chicken for breakfast from a really half-assed ladyboy, discarded the pink bits, and lugged my bag out to the train station. The train from Kanchanaburi goes along some minor branch line from a c...

I slept absolutely wonderful tonight, in my luxurious room next to the river. I did had to put my anti mosquito machine in the plug though, because the water does attract some uninvited guests. But apart from the little bloodsuckers, that perished soon after my little machine got in to action, I didn’t encounter any insects in my room. Thank God, because ones it got dark there did were some huge beetle like creatures on the walls outside, and I wouldn’t want to find those under my b...

It got off to a bad start and I should have read the omens. The minibus to Kanchanaburi had broken air vents and it's windows were stuck shut, making for an uncormfortable two and a half hours. When I arrived at around midday, I was told that the bus to 'The Tiger Temple' would be leaving at 2.30pm. Luckily the 'infamous' bridge over the River Kwai was a ten minute walk away and I had bags of spare time on my hands. Silver linings and all that! It's not a very impressive sight, infact its a ve...

We started in Bangkok and as the trip unfolded, we continued our journey on every mode of transportation imaginable, stopping in Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Kuala Lumpur, and the Perhentian Islands off the coast of Malaysia before reaching Singapore a month later. It was an adventure of a lifetime that left an indelible memory for both of us!
