This is our tour group in front of the hotel. There is me in the middle (wearing one of my fake Lacoste T-shirts), Jef and Gerda at my right, Elisabeth and Sonia (the girls from Luxembourg) at my left, and behind them David and Mireille (the Walloon couple). All in the right corner is Raf and Carine, and in front from left to right there is hot, our busdriver, and our Thai guide Mac. Those are the people I hang out with. To be honest, I have already forgotten the names of the others :SAlready...

I don't have much to say about Chiang Rai since i was only here two days and I was sick pretty much the entire time. It didn't seem like there was all that much to do here and most backpackers only stay a night on their way to Laos.

After a very good night of sleep (sometimes waking up because some gecko's were making noises) and having breakfast I returned to Chiang Rai using the free ride from the hill house. The trip standing in the back of a pick-up truck was fun. There was a Canadian girl on the ride that will be on the same flight tomorrow so we agreed to share a tuc-tuc to the airport.I checked in at the Akha river house (related to the Akha hill house), because I didn't want to bother looking for another guesthou...

What was it they said about 'the best laid plans....'? Mine went fairly astray today because a number of factors involving rogue bus drivers, language barriers, and the thai way of life in general. After being reassured multiple times by the Chiang Mai hotel concierge that there would be at least hourly airconditioned buses to Chiang Khong taking only six hours I took a leisurely approach to breakfast and checkout, arriving at the bus depot at 0915, only to be told that the only bus to C...

With breakfast and a packed lunch we headed out on tuk-tuks to the border to begin our trip into Laos. First step was to clear Thai customs. After receiving the required exit stamp we took a short walk down to the river and onto a long boat ferry across the Mekong to the opposite bank and Laos border crossing. Here we were met by our local guide, cleared customs, and exchanged money. Laos deals in Kip and it's about $9,625 kip to the Cdn dollar. A short van ride took us to our boat...

I woke up early and walked to the local 7/11 to get some supplies for the journey to Chiang Khong - water, nuts and tissues. With the shopping done I went back to Nice Kitchen for some breakfast - so much for eating somewhere new everyday! - and ordered some muesli with fruit and milk, plus a fruit shake. The waitress brought to my table what I can only describe as a 'mound of food in a bowl'. The bowl was full to over-flowing with pieces of fresh and dried fruit, cereal, nuts, seeds and...

I had the wonderful opportunity to spend a month and a half in Thailand for serice work and cultural education. Four other students and I divided our time between learning about NGO work, volunteering at the McKean Leprosy Center sponsored by the Thai-German Leprosy Foundation in Chiang Mai, and exploring the wonderful sites, temples and markets of Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Surat Thani, and Krabi, as well as numerous remote villages on the northern Thai border during our humanitarian trips.

They say the world is
getting smaller. After the almost 24 hour journey from Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Bangkok, Chiang Rai to Chiang Khong I would say it’s
still pretty big.
The guesthouse in
Chiang Khong was located at the riverside of the Mekong. The river functions as the border between Thailand and Laos and from my room window I could see Laos at the other side. I was determined to stay awake as long as
possible, so I would get used to the new time zone right away.
I ...
