As Robbie Williams would say, 'the kids are alright'! Dec 01, 2016
Welcome to the OLDEST temple in Thimphu! That itself is a quite a feat considering the town is choc-a-block of temples.

The Changangakha Temple is famous particularly for children. Parents of newborns rush here as getting their baby named here is a big thing; also, folks hoping to be parents one day come here for blessings.

The Buddha here is inside a sanctum sanctorum. Only pregnant women or parents with newborns are allowed inside. Rest of us are blessed from the outside.

Our guide Nawang was explaining how naming happens in Bhutan: the family priest is in charge of picking names. Parents don't have to accept it, they can ask for alternatives but they can't pick one themselves. Likewise, a name in Bhutan doesn't necessarily follow a First Name - Family Name format. The first and second words of a name don't necessarily need to be the same for all members in a family; and apparently, at times the position of a word in the name is based on the gender of that person.

There is a HUGE HUGE long prayer wheel around the temple that several devotees spin for good luck.

The temple by itself is in a fairly secluded and residential uphill area, so that adds to the serenity of the place.
