Chachapoyas Land of the "Cloud People". Capital of Amazonas is the doorway of adventure into a world of lost civilizations and ancient ruins. Snowcapped volcanoes and glacier mountain peaks barricade Chachapoyas to the south. River gorges cut the Andes Mountains parallel to Chachapoyas on the west. Amazon jungle lands push to the east and north boundaries of the Chachapoyas region. Even in our modern-day geographical boundaries isolate the Chachapoyas region.
Chachapoyas is one of Peru's oldest cities. It still maintains a majestic Spanish influence due in a large part because of its isolation from tourism. At an altitude of 2335 meters, Chachapoyas is a prosperous city with sugar cane, coffee, orchids and tile-roofed buildings.

I awoke early to the roosters crowing. Now, let me tell you that the widely held city dweller belief that the rooster crows at dawn is way off the mark. First of all, it’s well before dawn, and second, one or two times isn’t enough. They make a din and keep it up for awhile. Late start after getting into Chachapoyas at 5am. However breakfast was still laid on for us and Ezac (lad who talked us into staying at hostel) was still on duty. Really nice lad who after chatting for a while, insisted on showing us the sights of Chachapoyas once he had finished his shift. He sorted Dave out with a shop to buy his much needed waterproof jacket (best bet was a plastic poncho which Dave is currently refusing to model for a photo !!) before taking us for a wa...
