Cetli: A fine mexican dining experience Mar 23, 2010
Based on a recommendation by our Moon Yucatan Peninsula Handbook, my partner and I decided to try Cetli, a fine dining mexican restaurant located west of the main street in Tulum. As foodies at heart, we were ecstatic about this find and happily came back on our last night as a farewell treat.
We entered a lovely restaurant, decorated with local art, pretty white linens, and illuminated by soft lighting and candles. We opted to sit in the "Outside" area, which is enclosed with an open roof that allows for fresh air but allows for a fine dining feel. There is also a screened "indoor" area with very pretty decorations and comfortable seating.
This restaurant is special! The restaurant is all about the dining EXPERIENCE (With fantastic all-organic food to boot!). Chef Claudia not only prepares amazing mexican cuisine, but also acts as your server, guiding you though her creations. Her descriptions are thorough and engaging. She is genuine, humble, and thrilled to answer any of your questions. In our conversation with her, we learned that in addition to her role as owner, chef and server, she drives to Cancun herself once per week to select her ingredients. She is a gem in and of herself.
Each entrée is preceeded by a unique appetizer platter that is explained in full. Entrées include vegetarian, seafood, and chicken dishes. Price per plate ranges from $18-$40 (This was incorrect in our handbook which stated prices ranged $5-$12, but was worth the splurge). Each dish is presented beautifully and comes with rice wrapped by a tamale. Of the dishes we tried, our favorite was the chicken with black mole. AMAZING!!
For dessert, we hit up Chef Claudia for her recommendation. Without missing a beat she strongly suggested the corn bread with kalua and chocolate. We were not dissapointed! The textures and flavors were the perfect end to a fabulous meal. We definately recommend you try this!
Please note that the second night we were at the restaurant, Chef Claudia was not working. This was on a Sunday. You may find it helpful to call ahead of time to ensure her presence, as we found that this was what truly made the dining experience special.
