Cesis is about 90km east of Riga. It is easily accessible by train and bus from Riga. In Cesis lies the medieval ruins of Cesis Castle. Built by German crusaders in 1209, the castle is definitely worth the trip. Costing only one lat to get in, you get a candle and are free to roam about the ruins. One of the towers is still accessible to climb up into. The castle grounds also contain a fallen Lenin statue complete with a coffin located near the garden entrance. There is also a blacksmith where you can watch traditional Latvian jewelry being made. There is also a dungeon, but only the first level of it is accessible. Cesis is also home to the Cesu brewery, one of the oldest in Northern Europe. The town has plenty of options for eating with cafes spread out all over the place.
