Centro Cultural Metropolitano Quito Reviews
Exhibitions and history of the building. May 17, 2009
It cost you $2 to visit the building and exhibitions given here. The building of Centro Cultural Metropolitano is a very historic building. It has been renovated in 2000 and now has some modern parts in it as well, also in the patios.
In the past centuries the buidling was supposedly the pre-Hispanic site of one of the Inca Atahualpa's palaces. From 1597 to 1767 it was a Jesuit school and after that it became a quartel (army barracks). In 1809 royalist forces imprisoned a group of revolutionaries and gruesomely murdered them a year later here. This is all memoralized in a wax exhibitin the on-site Museo Alberto Mena Caamaño, which cost you $1 extra to visit.
