Walk around San José Mar 12, 2017
When it comes to architectural delights, San José is pretty limited. In fact a half-day walk around the city centre is enough to see, although not actually visit, the major centres of interest.

We started our walk at the Casa Amarilla, a neo-colonial house built in 1920 and today houses the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From there walk through the Spanish park, garden of Peace and the Morazon park will then bring you down Calle 5 to a large square with the Gold museum and the National theatre, the latter undergoing renovation work (Jan 2017). Also you are on Central avenue, a pedestrian precinct for shopping. Follow this and you'll find the Central market and off on Calle 2 the post office which is 100 yo old this year. Also houses the main tourist information office of San José. Walk on to Calle 12 and you'll find the small Mercy park and opposite the pretty Church of Mercy.Turn left along Avenida 4, another pedestrian precinct until the Central park and the Metropolitana cathedral, the largest in San José. Avenida 4 stops at the Soledad church where we were lucky to find and spend an hour or so watching the events surrounding the Chinese New Year. There is a distinct Chinese presence in the surrounding streets. Our walk then took us along Avenida 2 to Democracy square and the imposing National museum. On the square there is a statue of José Figuerés, a three-time former President that among other reforms abolished the army, allowed women and illiterates the vote and guaranteed education for all.

Cross the street past the National Assembly and into the National park. Our walk ended along Paseo des Damas at the Spanish park.

I was also in Costa Rica a few years ago and spent some time in San Jose. Reading your review refreshed my memories of the city. We also walked around San Jose and saw the same places you did. Thanks for sharing.
