Great market for photographers Feb 03, 2017
The Central Market in Pyin Oo Lwin (Maymyo) turned out to be much bigger than i thought and you can find it a block south-east of Purcell Clock Tower, just ask anybody. The market covers several blocks and sells everything that a local resident would require. Besides kitchen housewares, clothes, DVD's etc there is a very large area where fruit, vegetables, fish and meat are sold and this is the area that i am usually attracted to when i wander through markets as it provides some wonderful photographic opportunities.

PHOTO 1 We were lucky as in February it is the height of the strawberry season and we ate them everyday, and there are many stalls where you can buy them. They come in small paper boxes that are two different sizes, and cost 500 or 1000 kyat. Late afternoon we could buy 3 of the smaller boxes for 1000 kyat, just before the stall holder closes for the day.

PHOTO 2 Another fruit in abundance were watermelons, big, sweet and juicy, much better than the melons we get at home. They are mass produced here and as i mentioned in a previous tip truckloads are sent to China each day.

PHOTO 3 The stalls that had big containers of what looked like pickled vegetables were interesting to see, very colorful. I recognised most of the vegetables but did not sample any.

PHOTO 4 Several stalls were selling peppers, curry powder and other spices.

PHOTO 5 Fish were also on sale here, although i never came across an area with many stalls, must have missed it.
