Live like the locals... Apr 14, 2011
Looking for a bite to eat while enjoying the markets in Port Louis? Skip the restaurants and head straight for the local food stands. Alooda Glacee is the drink of choice this almond vanilla milky drink with basil seeds and agar agar strips is delicious and incredibly refreshing in the sweltering Port Louis humidity. Savoury musts are the Dhall Pouri,Gateaux Piments (chilli cakes), Gateaux Arouille (yam fritters), Bhajas (onion fritters) and the Samoosas. All completely addictive and so so cheap.

And for those with a serious sweet tooth there are stands filled to the brim with delicious cakes. The best being the famous (in Mauritius, anyway) Gateaux Napolitaines, sweet shortbread like biscuits filled with raspberry jam and covered in pink icing or if you're feeling daring and need a real sugar kick try the Gateaux Moutail (Jalebi), a bright orange, swirl shaped creation. But really, if you consider yourself a serious sweet tooth you should probably just buy one of each and try the lot.
