Guatemala! - no suitcase
posted by:
Sep 29, 2000 - Dec 15, 2000
I arrived in Guatemala City very late! And of course my suitcase did not make it! GREAT! I filled out all the paperwork at the "lost and found" and hoped that I would get it next day with the next flight!!! ----- Well it took them excatly 4 days and me a lot of phone calls!! They kept telling me all kind of stories ----- I was glad that the family I was staying with gave me some basic things so I can survive the first days! The airline staff kept promising me - "tomorrow you will get...

Flying to San Jose in time for lunch
posted by:
Aug 18, 2007 - Aug 27, 2007
I'm all packed and ready to return home. My flight is not until 2:55 pm, so I have some time to kill. This part of the trip is always the worst because you don't have time to do anything fun and it is hard to relax because you start thinking about the long trip home and what awaits you. I will check out of the hotel at 11 am and take a taxi to the airport. Unfortunately my flight back is not direct and, assuming I make my connection in Houston (which could be close), I will get...

Arrival to Nicaragua
posted by:

On driving in Nicaragua:" I took my car to the mechanic once.  When I went to pick it up, the mechanic told me he couldn't fix my brakes so he made my horn louder."If this isn't the epitome of Nicaraguan driving, I don't know what is.  Car rides, even short ones, are both scary and exhilirating, as you could never get away with driving the way they do in the States.I arrived in Jinotepe just in time to say goodnight to most of my family. I don't have pictures of Jinotepe, as I've be...

Arriving in Costa Rica
posted by:
May 01, 2006 - May 12, 2006
Our hotel room was all we could hope for.  Clean and cheap, with reasonably comfortable beds :-)  Upon checking in, we promptly headed to the restaurant for some much needed grub.  Costa Rican food is not too bad.  It's a bit plain but it's good.  Our first meal consisted of rice, beans, fried plaintains (bananas but not as sweet), salad, etc.  This exact meal is usually listed as "Typical Costa Rican food" or "casado" and is available in just about every re...

After Thursday´s disaster, I finally left on Friday. I arrived in Panama at about 1 pm and my family was at the airport to meet me. It was rather nice weather, and I was happy to finally be here. The rest of the day I spent just catching up with family, and visiting some neighbors that live in my uncle´s neighborhood. The following day, I went to Central Ave. and walked around, bought some things. I also met one of my aunts who I haven´t seen for a good while; it was nice to see her agai...

Another day of laying on the beach, we've got a plan tomorrow of actually doing something. We've been ganging with the Canadain's we met on the boat and are going to split a rental car up to the jaguar preserve about 50 miles north of here. We booked a dorm room for 2 nights at the reserve and it should be cool. The Canadain couple are cool, they run a circus in Toronto and have some interesting stories. more to come.   derek

San Jose to Dominical
posted by:
Aug 08, 2004 - Aug 15, 2004
My sister and her friend Will had been in Costa Rica for a week before I arrived. They met me at the airport with a rental car and started driving to Dominical, with a brief stop for lunch in Jaco. By the time we got to Dominical it was dark...oh and the road we took was pretty dodgy in the dark. There were small wooden bridges you had to cross and they were hard to see! We drove down the main street in Dominical (which isn't much) and could not find any place to stay until we ended up down b...

San Salvador
posted by:

This is my second trip to El Salvador this year. I entered the plane in Altanta and as I was traveling with two work mates, we had some good jokes and laughing as we entered the aircraft. The cabin crew as well as other Delta officials greeted us and informed me that we are on the Delta pink plane "walk for the cure" plane. When we arrived in San Salvador, the plane was sprayed with firetrucks (as a welcome ceremony) and the TV camera's and photog's as well. LOL it was an odd experience....

guatemala is an awesome place. a bit crazy thoughthe first weekend i was here the guatemala elections were happening country wide. no where was allowed to sell alcohol though the locals were all wasted and partying for 4 days straight. these elections saw about 50 candidates murdered and the child of one candidate murdered in warning. they are serious about their politics here. and even after all these ¨politics¨ there is still no president. there was no clear margin between the ex-g...

Arrival in San Jose

Costa Rica is a great place with lots of places to visit.  I spent two weeks and visited both coasts, took a sea kayak tour and visited an active volcano.  Sounds like a lot but there are still lots more things to do.  I could come again and spend more time and see totally diferent things.  There's national parks in the mountains to visit and more along the coast.  Sounds like some good possibilities for another trip.  Pura Vida!
