Majestic and demur. Not always the things that come to mind when one considers Latin America. But even as rustic haciendas and plantations mix in with shanties and wooden shacks, San Jose certainly can be described as majestic. And with a highly educated population, there is an air of sophistication rarely encountered in her neighboring countries. The beauty of Costa Rica is immediate and unending. The unfortunate "gift" of this beauty is that everyone who visits, dreams of staying. As one dr...

After arriving in San Pedro Sula at the airport and making it through customs, I made my way to he bus station and took a 3 hour bus ride to the Mayan ruins of Copan and the village of Copan Ruinas. Along the way the bus went through the mountainous countryside and through the village of La Entrada. La Entrada looked like a hub of activity for the locals. Lots of activity and local color. 2 hours later the bus arrives in Copan Ruinas.

Lyrics for Guatemala National Anthem, second place runner up, most beautiful Anthem in the world, only procede by France "marseillaice" Anthem.

My mom, my sister and I met up in Belize for a week-long vacation. The tiny Central American country has a reputation for excellent natural preserves (both above and below the ocean), and fantastic Mayan cities. We were psyched for both! We flew in to Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport, the only international airport in Belize. It is very small, but there's a restaurant and a bank, and several stores. We arrived around noon, so we had a bite to eat at the restaurant before continuing o...

Belize was a tender port as Grand Cayman had been. But, Carnival Miracle anchored considerably father offshore this time. The tender took about 10 minutes to travel from the ship to the dock in Belize City. Here, we connected with our tour to the Mayan ruins at Xunantunich. This turned out to be quite a wonderful tour and way to experience the country. It was not only an all-day tour to Xunantunich, but became a tour of Belize City and of the country itself. We had two gui...

Yesterday I went to the most poor area in El Salvador, they call it « departamento de Morazan ». I think this day will stay in my mind for always… Since I began in this microfinance world, I’ve always read and shared experiences with the expatriate people, I saw pictures, so I could imagine how it is. The point is, even if the people talk about it, even if you read about it, even if you see pictures, you can never feel what it is until you live that. See this people, share our...

We took it easy today. Perla woke up and started to work. I use the time to update the blog and check that all of our reservations were still good.
We had lunch with my dad, uncle Tono and aunt Rosalia. The three of them plus my mom came to visit us this June at Chicago. We show them the city and even went to see a cubs game which was a treat for my dad. He loves baseball.
We went to a restaurant called La Hacienda Real. The place was almost empyt when we came, but by the time we were out t...

Today I got home from Costa Rica, which should be renamed Costa Roja, since that's what color you are after a day on the costa. In my case it's a poisonous shade of red, almost purple really, that stops complete strangers in their tracks in the airport restroom where I lifted up my shirt several times for a better look at my stomach.
Costa Rica was Splendid! I saw two volcanos (Poas and Arenal), dozens of waterfalls, a million butterflies, a hundred hummingbirds, 14 howler monke...

Pictures of my trip to Guatemala on the dental team.
I'm fortunate to be a member of a team which travels to many countries around the world. We provide free dentistry to those who in most cases have never seen a dentist. www.kindnessinaction.ca

Flying in a 10seat Sansa Air is an experience on its own,
feel like a missionary delivering words of the good book to Guanacaste!
Airport is small, and as my friend put it… CUTE! Five
minutes later we are at the hotel beach, Tamarindo Diria it is called. Over
priced & the picture of the room lied, pictures always lie yet I felt for
it one more time. I hope my pictures don’t lie. Nikon D200 is loaded &
ready.
This place is full of t...

For whatever reason, this last year I started becoming fascinated with watching clouds every time I would fly somewhere. I decided I would see if I could get any decent photos while I was on the plane. Unfortunately, a seat over the wing is not conducive to great photos! :-)
Once we hit Belize City and hopped on our puddle jumper over to the Caye, it started POURING rain, a theme for the remainder of the week unfortunately. Usually we always have good weather but it ...

We got up, and since our flight didn't leave until 7am the next day we took it easy and didn't hurry. The drive was pretty un-eventful. However we did run into a check point for drugs. As far as we could tell if you didn't have a surf board all they did was ask for your passport and the vehicle regristration, and you moved on. If you did have a surf board, you were pulled off to the side and everything was removed from your vehicle and they had the dogs go through the luggage and car. Up arri...
