The Cayo District is the second largest district in Belize. It is located on the interior of Belize on the border of Guatemala. The Cayo District is the main area for tourism on the interior of Belize, with cities such as Belmopan and San Ignacio, it is easy to see why. There are many cheap hotels, restaurants, bars, and activities in this district to satisfy any traveler.
There is also a great mix of people in this district, with great populations of Mestizos (Spanish Maya), Chinese, Creoles, Lebanese, Guatemalans, Mennonites and Mayas. There are many adventure companies and tours available that can take you canoing, rafting, tubing, hiking, birding, and more. With many different ruins, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, Chaa Creek, and the largest being Caracol. There are also two major rivers, the Mopan and Macal River. Two major highways are found in this district, the Western Highway, which runs from Belize City to the Guatemalan border. The Hummingbird Highway starts in Belmopan and runs south. This district is a great place to visit if you want to move from the beaches and get an inside look to Belize, with forests and ruins.

Driving to Belmopan, Belize from Milwaukee, Wisconsin was life-altering to say the least! (Yes, I loved every minute of it! :) ) Once in Belize, I spent some time getting to know the people and exploring as much of the country as I could. Hopefully, some of these pics will give you guys a feel of how wonderful Belize truly is.

Expensive?
Now then, Belize. Many of those I met on the road were not going to Belize because it is viewed as expensive. Well, that depends on where you go. I understand that the world class destinations Belize has to offer are quite expensive - some of the Cayes on and around the Barrier Reef are such places, but San Ignacio isn't and there are some great things to do around there. Indeed, I wish I had more time there.
San Ignacio itself isn't spectacular and I spent my ...

The journey to Xunantunich took us across the whole of Belize, almost to the border with Guatemala. After passing through the town of San Ignacio, we continued on the Western Highway to a point where we had to cross the Mopan River. The ferry, which reminded me of White's Ferry on the Potomac, cannot accommodate a tour bus. We had to disembark and the cross the river on the ferry on foot. Several minivans were waiting on the other side to take us the last few miles to the Xunantunich sit...

San Ignacio, in Belize's western Cayo District, is a the place to stay for your land-based activities. The town, referred to by locals only as Cayo, is built along the shore of the Macal River. Directly across the Macal, on the opposite shore, is the town of Santa Elena. There are many nice guest houses, motels, and hostels located throughout town, as well as restaurants, internet cafes, souvenire shops, and tour guide offices. It is from Cayo that one can explore seve...
