Cayan Cay Utila Reviews
Cayan Cay Fishing Village Jan 12, 2012
Cayan Cay is a fisherman village few hundred meters from the coast of Utila. Island is densely packed with houses that are almost floating on the water and around 600 people call this place a home. Island is extremely low, maybe there is 2 meter on the highest point, and some of the buildings have wave breaker walls surrounding them. Small paths go between the houses, and everyone has dock with boat or two.
Main business on the island is fishing, and few days per week boats from the mainland come to buy and transport fish to La Ceiba. There is some accommodation and one dive shop on the island. Couple restaurants sell staple food that involves lots of fish and conch. There is also few small markets and two ladies that make mean cinnamon rolls and other baked goods.
It is very easy to stroll around the place, but be sure that your boat has someone watching over, because stuff will disappear :)
