Cave of the Winds Manitou Springs Reviews
Colorado Cave Tours Aug 21, 2010
If you enjoy caves, this is a great day trip from Denver. About an hour and a half south of Denver and just outside of Colorado Springs, Cave of the Winds is great fun for everyone.
The location is easy to find and parking is free and plentiful. We decided to do the Lantern Tour which runs about an hour and a half. The Lantern Tour takes you to a different part of the caves where you don't have concert walkways, lights or hand rails. You are guided using a oil lamp lantern which is a tin pail with a small oil lamp placed in inside. There are steps and wet areas so you have to be careful where you step but the tour guide was great about making sure everyone knew what was coming up.
The caves and formations were amazing. The guide told the history of the caves throughout the tour and threw some ghost stories in there as well. At one point, we got to experience "total cave darkness" where your eyes are unable to adjust. I think not having lighting other than the small lantern made the tour much more exciting.
There are a few tour options which can be found here: http://www.caveofthewinds.com/Tours.aspx. The lantern tours are usually kept at about 15 people and because you are in a different part of the cave system, you have less traffic and less noise.
There is a gift shop and a snack bar. I also saw a PlayLand but not too sure what that was about.
