Caution before you go at night
Caution before you go at night Tijuana Reviews
Jul 28, 2007
Like the title says, be careful before heading down at night. You can get to Tijuana from San Diego by a trolly for $2.50 one way or $5.00 for a round trip. Based on personal experiance and others you might want to follow these tips.
.You don't need a passport to get into TJ until 2008 but having one on you can speed up the process of getting out. You can also bring an ID if your American but the other way is still faster.
.Avenida Revolucion is the main tourist zone and is a short walk from the border. You can also take a cab but it isn't really worth it. Signs will tell you which way to go but if you get lost don't worry. Walk up the first street you enter on until you see a courtyard area to your left. Go through the courtyard and go up a walk way that leads to a bridge. Go over the bridge and keep going straight and your there!
.If you buy from a street vendor then try and bargin with him as it is always expected. Most establishments except American cash.
.You can find a lot of good deals for Alcohol if you look in the right places. Some of the clubs and bars on the street can have horiable prices for beer and other drinks so choose wisely.
.DON'T go to the ATMs while you are there. Bring your cash with you before you go over the border as I have learned the hard way. Leave your credit cards at your place of stay if you can and gurad your money at all times, as tourists (especially non-spanish speaking ones) are walking targets. If you do use ATMs while down there then take care because there will be scouts out to take down your PIN and at the border the cops will search you and switch your card with a similar one and drain your account.
.Use your common sense. Go with someone else and don't go down dark places. There are severel different scams used in TJ. One is where you hand the bartender a $20 and get back $10 or he shows you that you only handed him a $1 hopeing your too drunk to notice.
.DON'T buy any illegal drugs or perscription drugs not allowed in the US because you will be checked before you get to the border checkpoint. One thing the police will try and do is have informants sell drugs to tourists only to arrest them later and give the drugs back to the informant.
.DON'T listen to the people that try and hustle you into clubs that have a beer bong. They'll pour something down your throat and then charge a lot for it. TJ isn't the cleanest place in the world so don't expect things like all the woman in stripclubs to be woman as I also had to find out the hard way....that was not fun....
.Cops in TJ are known to be highly corrupt. Don't piss them off and don't do anything illegal. They take advantage of anybody who does anything illegal and may make you go to an ATM to pay them one of their "fines".
.If you leave then make sure you have a valid trolly pass. If you bought one at 11pm in San Diego and get on the trolly at 5am, then get a new pass because security rides on the trollies and check your tickets right away. I ended up getting a $120 fine because my pass was 3 hours old and since I don't live down there, I coulden't defend myself in court and got a larger fine then normal.
.If you drove over the border then get Mexican car insurance as it is required. Some people will hit your car the momment you get over the border to get money out of you and it's bad news if you don't have the proper insurance.
You can still have a good time in TJ and there are a lot of good people who are there. You can take tours that start in San Diego and go to TJ during the day. Don't think that TJ is an actual Mexican experiance because it's not. If your over 21 and can drink then stay in San Diego but it is fun to try it once.
