Gothic Cathedral of Zagreb Mar 13, 2015
There are 2 main cathedrals/ churches in Zagreb. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the landmarks in Zagreb for its 2 Spires.

We entered this one. To me, it was nothing really amazing in the sense that it is not as extravagant and lavishly decorated like some Catholic churches I had seen before. Taking pictures of the Church was more exciting for me. They have a strict observance that no photography was allowed indoor which was fine by me.

The cathedral is the biggest church in Zagreb and it is visible from far away. The church is easily recognizable with the two towers one of which is currently under repair. The church is from the 13nd century and but it has been rebuilt several times - the current repair is due to the fact the reconstruction after an earthquake in 1880 used substandard materials. The poor quality has caused the spires to erode pretty quickly - and in front of the church you can see an example of the spires which is eroded and how it looks after repair.

You can go inside the church if you are probably dressed with long pants - like in all catholic churches. The inside of the church is nicely decorated and quite impressive. The most remarkable sight inside the church is the tomb of the Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac who is on the track to become a saint.

It is well worth to come and see the church and square at night when it is illuminated which is also the case for the small fountain in front of the church.

This gothic cathedral, located in the upper town ("Gornji Grad") of Zagreb is worth checking out if you are in the area. Built in the 11th century, it is one of the more impressive buildings in Zagreb, and the interior is elaborately decorated. My favorite part about the cathedral was the odd looking old text carved into its walls, which my Croatian friend told me was an alien language from outer space ;)There is also a pretty cool outdoor market in the courtyard in front of the church. Some of the fruit didn't look too fresh, but probably better than what you might find elsewhere.
