Granada Cathedral Nov 12, 2013
The cathedral of the incarnation, Granada, is a Renaissance/Baroque era cathedral, built after the reconquest of Spain starting tom 1518 and taking almost 200 years to be finished. This has given it a more or less traditional church floor plan, but with a sort of circular mini-dome rather than an abse over the alter, and it also means that the church is starker and less ornate than you would expect from most Spanish catholic cathedrals. It also owes less to the floor plan of mosques than most Andalucían cathedrals, which tend to be squarer than northern churches. The most striking features for me were the beautiful high alter, with its ceiling of stars and silver alter and censor, which contrasts with the plain white of the rest of the nave, and the decorated church books dotted around behind the alter.

There is also a small side room with treasures, mostly the highly ornate robes of the clergy and the usual collection of chalices, but also a plaster model of the head of John the Baptist on a platter. I do wonder how many horror directors had catholic childhoods, to be honest, as catholic church art does tend to involve an awful lot of saints being tortured to death or presented on platters, but that is probably a matter for another day.

Granada cathedral is neither as huge as Seville or as fascinating as the mezquita in Cordoba, and it would be easy to miss it from a tour of the area, but it is a very nice large church and worth popping into, especially for a look at the beautiful illustrated books. The colours are gorgeous and I enjoyed spotting the marginalia monsters and things in the edges of the texts. There is an entrance fee of a few Euros, but it isn’t expensive, and there are no Seville-style epic queues. Disabled access should be fine.
