Not your typical vacation destination Jul 10, 2011
We were looking for a vacation destination which is not a common option for both local and foreign tourists in the Philippines, and we have decided for Virac, Catanduanes. Located on the Pacific Ocean side of the country, it is known for big waves, tropical storms, and wet season for almost all year round. To my judgment, Catmidinn is the most decent hotel in the capital town of Virac as we have checked out other available hotels as well. The staff is very helpful and accommodating. The rooms are comfortable, with basic amenities like cable TV, hot and cold shower, telephone, personal fridge, and WIFI but the connection we were getting from our room on the 3rd storey was from a nearby hotel. Food from the hotel restaurant is not bad, and the roof top of the hotel is a viewing deck.

The hotel has a private beach front property 30 minutes away. We opted not to avail of the hotel transport service (P500) and chose to take the public transport for us to experience the real small town culture of the Catanduanes province. The bumpy tricycle ride was only P30 per head.

The beach house is native-inspired but the toilet and bath is clean. The caretaker offered to cook rice for us for lunch.

The sand is white and marine life is abundant that my city-raised boyfriend was afraid to walk on the corals and seaweeds which are exposed on low-tide hours.

Overall, Catmidinn is the best place to rest after a day of exploring the beaches and mountains, and local seafood restaurants of Virac, Catanduanes.

Fact: Virac, Catanduanes is the crab capital of the Philippines.
