Catacombs S. Callisto Reviews

Jul 09, 2005
This often overlooked site in southern Rome is, in the reviewer's opinion, one of the best in the city. These catacombs, dating back to the 2nd century, are full of ancient wonder and mystery. It is in these very catacombs that many early Christians came to hold services. They did this because the law stated that "Christians could not hold service anywhere on Roman land". So, they went underground. Unfortunately, they were still persecuted and killed. The marks from swords are still on the catacomb walls. The guild will share with you many such stories about the catacombs and Rome in early Christian times. You will also get the opportunity to see remains from that period in time. Christian or not, it's a great experience and a great history lesson on what Europe was like in early AD.
