Castleton Mill Sep 14, 2017
Castleton Mill was built in 1836 by William Hargreaves for the purpose of spinning flax to thread. The thread was exported to weaving factories for linen produced via canal barges.

Fourteen years later, a weaving shed was added to the mill for manufacturing wool and linen. The family business then was passed onto new owners and textile production continued until the 1980s when the mill closed due to decline of industries.

The mill became a listed building in 1987 and today houses independent and creative businesses. I had an opportunity to take part in a small tour of the building during Heritage Open Weekend (usually at the beginning of September)
