Castlerigg Stone Circle Feb 16, 2017
Surrounded by the fells of Blencathra to the north and the Helvellyn range in the distance, Castlerigg Stone Circle is in a beautiful location. Believed to be built around 3,000 BC it is one of the oldest stone circles in the UK -- there are 38 stones in the circle (the average circle diameter is 30 metres) with 10 more in an inner rectangle -- it's precise use is unknown but is thought to have been used for religious or ceremonial purposes.
Directions: Just east of Keswick -- follow the signs from the A66 which take you along minor roads to the circle -- it's open at all times.
