Mancunium Mar 08, 2017
The rejuvenated conservation area of Castlefield is home to a Roman era fort called Mamucium (or Mancunium) dating from the year 79 AD. It was built by Gnaeus Julius Agricola in a strategic position guarding the road between the Roman settlements of Eboracum (York) and Deva (Chester). It was originally a wooden structure but was refaced in stone in about 200 AD. It's reconstructed walls are a short walk from Deansgate Castlefield tram stop and the Museum of Science and Industry.

At the site of the fort, there is also a sculpture entitled 'Sheep' by Ted Roocroft that dates from 1986.

There is no entry charge to walk through the area.

Castlefield - Roman Forts Jan 30, 2017
This is where Manchester began! It was the site of Mamucium or Mancunium Roman fort which gave the city its name. The fort was established around AD 79 near a crossing point on the Rivers Medlock and Irwell and served as a key defence position for Gnaeus Julius Agricola during his military campaigns. Settlement began to grow around the Fort over the centuries and linking to the village of Manchester. Following the Industrial Revolution Manchester became a world industrial centre and Castlefield area was the hub.

Nearby is the amazing Museum of Science and Industry). The museum tells a bit more about life in Castlefield during the Industrial Revolution and the aftermath.

The Canal Basin is also now part of Urban Heritage, the first of its kind in the UK, and was formed in 1982.
