Castle of Santiago do Cacem Jul 30, 2009
Legend says that the Castle of Santiago do Cacem was created by the magical force of a "gentle Moorish girl, as beautiful as love", who transformed the hazy mist into solid stone walls.
Little is known about this castle until 1158 where it was conquered by the Knights Templar. The castle was taken over many times the following couple of hundred years. In 1605 it was already described as a castle in ruins, this state continued until 1755 where the big earthquake hit it hard again, and badly destroyed the biggest tower. In the post reconstruction, where the Mother Church was rebuilt, the castle and the surrounding houses became popular again. It became fashionable for the aristocratic families to have their palaces and mansions nearby. In 1838 the Town Council inaugurated the public cemetery inside the castle and it is still used as such today. In 1930's the outer wall got reconstructed to what they look like today.
