Kasteel Ruine a.k.a Castle Ruins May 30, 2013
The only hilltop Castle in the Netherlands can be found in Valkenburg.

Back in thee day theis was a big castle. Now it's not a whole lot more then a whole lot of stones. Oke, maybe that's a bit harsh. Yes the Castle got ruined in 1672, December 10th to be exact, so there is no fancy or old stuff to be seen. However, for a ruin I think it's really well preserved.

Information signs are everywhere (dutch and English) and they will tell you exactly where you are standing and what purpose it had back in the day. Like the defensive towers, the dungeon, the great hall and a whole lot more!

There is no tour, like the Velvet Caves. So you can wander around by yourself, the information signs give you enough information, in my opinion. So I did not miss the guide. I like the fact that you can take as long or as short as you want whilst wandering around the ruins.

I love buildings, well buildings ... I love buildings and ruins :) they tell something about the history of a place. Working together with the velvet caves you get a total history package and I would definitely recommend going to both.

Opening hours can be found on their website. Entrance will cost you €9.- p.p. (children under 3 are free, 4-11 it will cost you €7.50) This includes the Velvet Caves as well as the ruins and a map. So two for one! They use the money to restore thee ruins and the caves.
