A wonderful backpackers, difficult to beat Feb 14, 2017
I grew up as a child on the outskirts of Edinburgh and just wanted to visit one last time so i knew the city well when it came to researching for a hostel. I booked this hostel a few months before my visit after studying the reviews and facilities on as it seemed to have everything i required which i will list below.

Central and within walking distance of the castle, the Royal Mile and Princes Street

A 5 minute walk to Waverley Station, the tram line for the airport and the buses along Princes Street

A beautiful location under the castle

An old building from 1846

WIFI in all floors of the hostel

Breakfast of juice, roll and cereal for 1-50 pounds

Free coffee and tea at all times

Free use of kitchen

Movie room

Patio outside

Spacious rooms to relax in

The accommodation ranged from 10 bed dormitories to double rooms. The rooms were exceptionally clean and spacious. The building had maybe 4-5 floors and high ceilings. The staff were international, very helpful and knowledgable. They had a storage room for luggage should you arrive early or take a trip out of the city for a few days. To sum up, i had an excellent stay, but i must admit i was out from 8 am to 10 pm and only required a bed to sleep in. There were many older people like myself staying at the hostel.

Simply Outstanding Oct 19, 2015
As this Hostel isn’t shy of trumpeting on its website and within its confines, Castle Rock has won just about every Hostel award going. Spend a few days here and it’s easy to see why: it ticks just about every box with aplomb.

Situated up close to the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle, it has evocative décor in spades. Replica knights watch over the stairwell and a version of Flodden Wall greets you at the 24/7 reception, where the international staff are unfailingly friendly, meeting just about any query you may have with a bright cheerfulness.

The common areas have something for everyone. The main lounge has a pool table and churns out party music by night. The ‘posh lounge’ a book case, a fish tank and comfy sofas for a more easy-going vibe. And there’s even a ‘no shoes, no laptop’ music room where guests are invited to spin their favourite discs. The bathrooms are also great: clean, spacious and well-stocked. Where else do you see an air freshener in every single toilet cubicle?

Finally, the rooms are both secure (as is the hostel as a whole), characterful – check out the individual bed and dorm names, which for me was ‘Topus Bunkus’ in the ‘Latin Room’ – and homely, with comfortable beds the order of the day. Quite simply put, dislike this place and you dislike Hostels in general!

Cool hostel Mar 26, 2014
I really enjoyed my stay in Castle Rock Hostel, it's big hostel with lots of public areas for people to join or just to sit around and liste to some music, use Wifi, have a coffee or tea (available 24h in a big room with kitchen services).

They even had a fire place in cosy room called the Posh Room nicelly decorated and where I relaxed every night after my tiring walking days.

Location is good, just next to the castel and old town center.

Most of the staff are very friendly and the blond recepcionist with who I checked in gave me very good tips that made my stay even more pleasant. (thanks, sorry I didn't got her name)

As cheap and close to Edinburgh Castle as you can get! Feb 08, 2011
I stayed at the Castle Rock Hostel in Edinburgh March 2010 and I can definitely recommend it, clean, fun and lively with a huge living room, pool tables and loads of company of other travelers. The rooms are spacious and nice and all have different themes. I loved the bunkbeds too because they are attached to the wall which means no waking up in the middle of the night while your bunkmate decides he wants to sleep on his back suddenly. it's close to all the major sights, its precisely downhill form the castle, just a walk up the stairs and you're there. everything is walkable but im sure you will love coming back here every night!

Castle Rock Hostel Apr 24, 2011
I have mixed feelings about this hostel...

I stayed for 1 night in a large room with high ceilings and a nice view of the Edinburgh Castle but i decided to leave the next day because i didn't like hiking up the Royal Mile every time i returned to the hostel so i went to another hostel down the road.

My new hostel included a towel-wrapped roommate whose persistent eye-contact, smiling and constant attempts at conversation while i'm trying to rest annoyed me to the point of leaving so i went back to the Castle Rock Hostel...

The guy had a weird way about him that i didn't trust too and whenever i get a feeling to leave, i listen, so i left.

Upon my return i was informed they were almost fully booked and only a couple beds left. I liked my previous room so i said okay... what i didn't realise is my new bed was in the basement with some of the people who live here for weeks and months.

When i entered the room i saw a little mouse hop over a pile of clothes. This room was a mess but i was too tired from walking back up the Royal Mile with my heavy backpack to go looking for another hostel.

As for the actual hostel, it has a friendly atmosphere, a large kitchen and social room with pool table and books.

Had i stayed longer or made myself available for a game of pool for example, then i may have met some people and a better time. The opportunity for having fun is here, but it's also a bit of timing and maybe little more effort than usual to get to know the regulars who live here, but the ones i met were really nice.

I couldn't quite find that right mix of social comfort in Edinburgh and in the end my first mistake was leaving the Castle Rock Hostel in the first place.

If i never left then i would have given this hostel some higher ratings but since i got moved to the basement I was able to experience another area to this hostel.

Seeing the mouse is why i gave cleanliness 1-star, otherwise it would have been 3-4 from what i saw in the first room and the other areas of the hostel.

Perfect value for money city location May 08, 2011
Stayed here in July 2009, couldn't believe how close it was to the Castle! OPPOSITE! Perfect location for someone coming to Edinburgh to do a spot of sight seeing. I and a friend stayed in the mr. men room which was a shared room (females), beds were comfortable and there was plenty of space for luggage including lockers which was pretty handy as whilst I was staying there someone got their laptop stolen!

Toilets and bathroom I remember being good :)

First night we got there we went out on a 'pub crawl' - was the night Michael Jackson was announced dead (other than that a good night). Lots of people from the hostel went and the hostel staff who were all really friendly which helped as we didn't know anyone.

The sitting room or 'lounge' was pretty cool, good decor! And the kitchen was huge so there was plenty of space when we did cook, usually ended up at Monster Mash :)

I would definatly recommed this hostel, hoping to come back for a visit this summr as walking John o Groast to Lands End and stopping off in Edinburgh.

Excellent hostel Jul 23, 2011
Amazing hostel, it was my favorite in the whole eurotrip. It's in an old huge house, with armors on the stairs, and excellently decorated to be cozy even though it's a big place.

The living/bar area is huge and has lots of groups of couches to mingle with other people. Also there's a quiet library-type area where you can just lay down in the huge couches and read by the fireplace. I totally loved it.

The location is also great, right by the castle.

The rooms have themes (I was in one where the beds were named after Snow White's dwarfs) and the beds are clean and comfy (at least mine was).

The staff is helpful and I would definitely recommend it for Edinburgh, I wish I had stayed there longer.

Best hostel in Edinburgh Jul 11, 2011
This was by far the favorite hostel I used throughout my 5 months in Europe. It is located right off of the Royal Mile, the main tourist strip of Edinburgh. It is walking distance to most attractions, and the staff was awesome for finding out about events and things to see. The hostel itself is very clean, with a great common room and nice rooms. Right around the corner are a host of restaurants that offer backpacker deals, as well as a few nightlife areas. Highly recommend staying here!

Castle Rock Hostel Jun 07, 2011
I chose this hosel because of its location to the castle and you can walk to many other places as well. The room I was put in was in the basement. I think I got stuck in the long term stay room. It was extremely messy in the room. People's things were all over the room and trash was on the ground. The bed was comfortable but the person below me along with others had created shacks for themselves. They have a big kitchen with everything you need to fix meals. They have a hang out room with computers with internet access. The security is good at the front door and the people working were extremely nice and helpful. I would stay at Castle Rock Hostel again just ask for a different room.

Very nice hostel! Apr 15, 2011
One of my friend told me to stay there and it was a good pick! Really clean, excellent location with a beautiful view on the castle, walking distance to everything! The deco really looks like an old castle and they have a huuuge chilling room which was highly appreciated! Only con is that there are no plugs in the rooms but they can charge you iPod/cellphone at the front desk!

Very nice hostel, with amazing location. Aug 02, 2010
This was the first hostel I've ever been to, and I found it very very nice. It's clean, it's got personality, comfortable, good location, and the best of all, it's got an old piano.

Highly recommended.

The hostel castle of Edinburgh Dec 14, 2009
Well I never got to stay here I visited and played some pool, they were booked out pretty much long term so I couldn't get a bed, this was right near my work place too :(

The staff were ok and the place is really clean and in probably the best location out of all the hostels in Edinburgh. You will be right near the castle of Edinburgh and be able to see down over the royal mile. there is a library really close but the supermarkets are a little far away, there are many restaurants in the area of royal mile to eat and drink.

Hostel with a view of Edinburgh Castle Jul 16, 2008
This hostel has everything you want, first of all the hostel is RIGHT OUTSIDE Edinburgh Castle. It has a great Scottish vibe to it, the staff is awesome, a huge lounge room with pool table, games, and FREE internet. There is loads of information to extend your trip beyond Edinburgh and see other parts of Scotland, and the staff will work with you to make your stay in Edinburgh and/or Scotland as good as possible. Also they have a sense of humor, all the rooms have a concept behind them, my room was “underwear” so all the beds instead of having numbers, they were called “knickers”, “thongs”, “edible” and so on… Other rooms were Scottish bands, Scottish football teams, etc.

This place is right in the heart of the city, so it doesn't take long to walk anywhere. There are different rooms available at different costs. There were three of us together, so we got a private locked room that had three beds in it. The bathroom was a shared one for the whole floor. No problems, though. The breakfast offered was great, and was very filling. I highly recommend it if you're looking to stay in a hostel.
