Very grand - very Baroque Nov 06, 2012
I had never been to Castle Howard before last Sunday, although it is one of Yorkshire's grandest stately homes. The Howard family has one of the proudest pedigrees in England and the Howards of Castle Howard are related to the Dukes of Norfolk, hereditary Earl Marshals of England.

Building commened in about 1699 but the hall took over 100 years to complete. I have only given it less than five stars because Baaroque does not appeal to me as much as Renaissance architecture and it would easily merit five to a Baroque lover. Again, some of the articles I would not have in my house although I can admire the workmanship in them. Others I find of outstanding beauty. Some of the collections are world famous.

It was too cold for me, having foolishly brought no gloves nor even a hat to cover my bald head, to spend much time in the grounds but even so I could see enough to be able to say that they are outstanding. November does not sound the right month to enjoy a rose garden but both this and the adjacent ornamental vegetable garden were utterly delightful.

There is a major lake in the grounds, providing a magnificent view from many of the house windows. Another time I shall make a point of reaching the arboretum.

There are several places to eat and the steak pie was great. There is a small 'train' running from the ticket office to the house and a lift for the disabled inside, making Castle Howard a fine outing for anybody.
