Castillo de Montjuic Barcelona Reviews
Nice view, but that's it Mar 29, 2008
The Barcelona Tourist Bus has a bus stop called ‘Telefèric de Montjuïc’. From here you can take the skyline cableway to the top of Montjuïc hill. At the height of 173 meters there were several fortifications, today only the Castell de Montjuïc remains.
This fortress was built in the 17th century and has 18th century additions. It served as a prison and until the time of General Franco it often held political prisoners. The Castell de Montjuïc was also the site of numerous executions. On different occasions during the Spanish Civil War, both Nationalists and Republicans were executed here, each at the time when the fortress was held by their opponents.
In my opinion, the history and numerous stories about the Castell turn are far more interesting than the sight itself. The fortress isn’t that special (unless you’ve never seen a typical fortress before) and the only attention grabber is the view over the city you have from here.
