Castelo de Guimarães Guimaraes Reviews
Nice adventure Nov 28, 2010
The castle was built in the tenth century in order to defend the monastery from the threat of Norman and Muslim attacks, and became a place of royal residence in the twelfth century.
The castle is still very visually impressive to walk around and explore, and the random collections of stones and grass growing within its walls gives it an ancient feel.
Though you can walk around the whole castle for free, it is important to remain cautious as the steps can be a little loose in places and there are a lack of rails or barriers in some parts. However, considering the age of the building, the castle is in excellent condition.
At the top of the castle, there are some lovely views of Guimaraes. Also, the surrounding greenery is very nice to stroll through.
The tower can be explored, but I think you pay a few euros for this specific part of the castle.
The castle is an iconic part of Guimaraes, and no trip to the city would be complete without coming here.
