A real Sicilian Castle Dec 13, 2011
My English girlfriend and I went on holiday in my home island, Sicily and decided to book in this beautiful baroque castle between mount Etna and Taormina because is not to far from my home town and so relatives colud visit us and other way round.

From the arrival to the end everything was wonderfull and you can breath the family atmosphere at all times, everyone knows eachother, and also the family owners lives and run the hotel and they are always there to greet and chat with the guests.

The welcome was very nice, the girl at the reception while she was taking us to the room gave us a quick tour of the halls and all the services that the castle offers, and also explained us averything about times and facilities.

We booked a suite (wich was a little bit expensive for me), but considering that was our 4th year anniversary I wanted to give us a treat.

We went last may, wich i think is the best moment in Sicily for people that come from north-europe because is not to hot and there is not the madness of august.

The hotel seemed very relaxing at all time, sometimes we had the feeling that the pool was almost private, infact one afternoon only another couple where there apart from us.

They serve drinks around the massive pool always with a smile wich doesn't cost anything but makes a huge difference. Also the beach was very nice but when we went it was not complete, unfortunately they guarante it only from june.

The SPA is is like a gem,we reccomend it to all the people that come to this hotel, it seems to go inside a Greek-Roman temple, it's small but very cozy.

They also have a tennis court wich we didn't use, but if you are sporty the castle is also sorround by beach and countryside where you can go running.

We also visited the arab norman castle of Calatabiano on top of the mountain wich belonged to same prince who built the hotel.from there the view was stunning and I absolutely reccomend it it's worth a visit.

The best thing of the hotel, is the restaurant, is a bit expensive for a 30 year old guy but it's so so good, and i am italian and a bit fussy sometimes about food.

The service is excellent and the food is superb, they deserve a michelin star wich i don't know why they don't have. They use the slow food presidia in their menu and vegetable fruit and herbs own grown in the castles superb gardens, once you try it you don't want to go out anymore for a meal. They offered us a grappa on the house after the meal in an old winery where the prince produced the wine.

We will definitely come back to this place and until that day i will miss it, thank you castello San Marco for make our special week unforgettable.

Things you can't miss around the hotel are Mount Etna, especially his little timeless villages, Taormina, and if you like nature Gole dell'Alcantara and the gambino winery on mount etna for a wine tasting.
