Castello di Gargonza Reviews
Something really special Apr 30, 2011
When in Tuscany you can chose a large number of great places to spend the night. One of them is Gargonza, strategically situated halfway Siena and Arezzo, some eight kilometers west of Monte San Savino.
The name of the hotel is "Castello di Gargonza", which you can find in the medieval village of Gargonza. In fact, the hotel IS the village!
Gargonza can be reached by a small road off SS73 (Siena - Arezzo) which leads north some kilometers through a green forest. The hotel is well signed, so you shouldn't miss it. You can park your car in front of the restaurant "La Torre di Gargonza", but it's more convenient to drive along the walls of the village and park your car under the main gate of the fortified city wall. You have to get up some non convenient stairs to reach the gate, so if you're not so sportive or have a lot of luggage we advice you to drive to the gate and dropp off, but you cannot leave your car here.
After entering through the gate you find yourself in the Middle ages. You're confronted with the village square with a water well on the foot of a dominating tower (when we were in Gargonza, the inside of the tower was in very poor condition, so we were not allowed to climb it - it must offer an astonishing view though). On the left is the reception.
Careful restauration efforts have changed the original houses into unbelievable hotel rooms. They still bear the names of the ancient inhabitants. Ours was called Canapino.
It is in the old Gargonza 10 building and offers a superior room with view on the pine forest at the back of the village.
Canapino has a huge living room with a big old fireplace. The bed is in a corner of the room, there are some chairs and a sofa, a bar and a kitchenette. The bathroom is equipped with bath and shower. We liked the room very, very much and every time enjoyed our "home coming" after a day of site seeing.
Gargonza has a few hidden gardens where you can enjoy a nice bottle of Chianti wine, which you bought yourself while visiting the region. With a bit of Italian cheese you can relax and watch the night falling over the this tranquil medieval place.
At the foot of the village, opposite the cozy restaurant (good ambiance, nice food), there's a big lawn with a large swimming pool. You do need a key to enter the pool area, which you can get at the reception.
From the swimming pool there's a great view of the surrounding area, while on your back the village tower rises high above the trees.
If you want a truly special place to stay in the south eastern part of Tuscany, you have to visit Gargonza.
Although it is possible to arrange transfers from the airport or train station, you should have a car to really benefit your stay.
