Fortress of Milano May 15, 2012
This enormous fortress really catches your eye in Milan and is a pretty sweet deal. The grounds are worth checking out and much of it may be wandered about for no charge. If you want to check out the four museums housed on the grounds - Castle Museum, Museum of Natural History, Museo del Risorgimento (Museum of Italian Unification) and Archaeological Museum – a ticket is only 3€.

We bought tickets and visited the Castle Museum, where the castle itself was almost as fascinating as the exhibits. There are three floors to the castle and you climb up incredibly broad stairwells built from massive slabs. Most of the rooms are domed and the ceiling is adorned with a religious scene, making for an impressive setting to display the other treasures.

The other treasures were dominated by Renaissance paintings, but there were sculptures, fragments of ancient structures (including several massive arches which made me wonder how they got them inside!), slabs from sepulchers, stained glass windows and even furniture. The furniture exhibit felt out of place because it progressed rapidly from Middle Ages to Contemporary and the modern pieces seemed misplaced in the old castle.

A great collection, though every other painting seemed to be yet another Madonna and Child, which became wearying after the first twenty. Another plus was that photography is allowed and we felt we got our entrance fee from this collection alone, and we still could have dropped in on three more museums!

Castello Sforzesco May 22, 2011
Castello Sforzesco is breathtaking. Located in the heart of Milan this is a must see sight. After walking through the castle you can either walk through the park where there are two nice places to eat, or head towards the Duomo where there are many street side restaurants.
