Castelar Hotel Buenos Aires Reviews
Old fashioned city hotel at a great location in BA Dec 18, 2008
Starting a 21-day roundtrip Argentina – Chile – Brasil we stayed the first two nights in Castelar Hotel & Spa. After 10 days of travelling we came back for one more night.
The first two nights we were staying in room 705. Federico Garcia Lorca, the Spanish poet/writer was living and working on this floor for about a year. We thought that our room (small bedroom, bathroom okay, small entrance hall) was fine, nothing special, rather small, but okay. Later it turned out to be one of best rooms our group was staying in! The third night we had a very, very small room. Had trouble finding room to open two suitcases. The hotel (built in 1929) is classic, old fashioned, but has a certain atmosphere which I like! Breakfast (buffet style) was not “overwhelming”, but no reason for complaining. Location of the hotel is just great, very busy avenue, but only 5-10 minutes walk to Plaza de Mayo. There’s a very nice restaurant (where lot of locals have a drink and food) when you (leaving the hotel) turn to the left, just on the corner, same block. Another nice place to have dinner is restaurant Hispania (only local folks, very friendly priced), leaving the hotel, turn to the left, next corner to the right, then on your right hand site. We had great tapas, tiger prawns and very nice white wine. Part of the Argentina - Chile - Brasil 2008/2009 travel blog |

The hotel has a very swish lobby. The rooms were of reasonable standard and the hotel is well located in the Congreso area, near a number of metro stations and the key and very wide Av 9 de Julio. There is also a steam room and sauna in the basement, although I did not use it. There are no great bars or restaurants immediately around, but just grab a taxi for 5 to 10 pesos to get you elsewhere as it is very central. The hotel did feel as though it may have seen better days, but that is being a bit picky. The reception staff are helpful as well.
