Great story, even better views May 02, 2011
This castle is situated on the outskirts of Naples and is worth a quick visit, especially as it’s free. The name translates as the castle of the egg, which is a great reference to the myth that Virgil conjured up a magical egg and placed it in the castle’s foundations as support. Pretty little stories aside, this castle has been here since the ninth century and survived attacks from the French and Spanish. Nowadays, weather permitting, you should get great views from the top alongside the canons and this makes the visit worth it alone. You don't really see much inside; there was an art exhibition or two but these were fairly low key. It also seems to be a popular picture spot for newlyweds, so if you see lots of blushing brides and photographers, don’t be alarmed!
