Casalinda Venice Reviews
Best Nachos in LA Oct 09, 2010
For a great casual restaurant on Abbott Kinney in Venice, try Casalinda. It use to be Tortilla Grill, but the new owners cleaned it up, put in some great furniture and added some cool murals. I use to like this place a lot when it was Tortilla Grill and I’m happy to say that I still like it! It is a little more expensive than before, but the food is a tad bit better.
It’s your standard Mexican faire, burrito, tacos, tostadas but the best item, that’s not on the huge menu is the nachos. I don’t know if nachos are an authentic Mexican food item but these are, by far, the best nachos in LA. For less than $10 you get a plate full of chips with salsa, guacamole, beans, cheese, jalapenos and sour cream. The best thing about these nachos is that they layer all the toppings so that at the bottom you aren’t left with just soggy chips. If you share them, the helping is enough for two and you won’t need to get an entree. What’s great about this place is that the food is very fresh. They grill the meats, not fry, they also boast organic tortillas. The guacamole is made fresh and nothing tastes likes it comes out of a can.
There is also a salsa bar with fresh pico de gallo, marinate carrots and green (hot jalapeno) and red (chipotle pepper) salsa. Both are great and you can get as much as you want. They don’t serve beer or margaritas so, that’s a bummer, but they do have cantaloupe and watermelon juice as well as horchata and fountain sodas. I definitely recommend the cantaloupe juice.
There is plenty of seating inside, upstairs as well as outside, I’ve never had to wait for a table. You order your meal, they give you a number, you get a table and somebody brings you your food. So It’s mostly self service, hence you don’t have to leave a tip when you leave.
