Casa Enrique is one of the many private own homes in which they rent out one or more rooms for tourist to generate some hard currency for the family. It is located sort of in the outskirts of town. Considering the city isn’t very large even the outskirt is pretty close to the central part. Unfortunately the beach in front of the house isn’t all that great - so if you actually want to enjoy the beach in the town which is named Playa after the beach in the central part of town. The beach in the centre is within walking distance - but considering the usual temperature around Playa Larga you will most likely be sweating like a pig after you walk back from the beach to the casa.

The house got five rooms and all the rooms got air-con. The three rooms is located in sort of a separate annex with a small sitting area in front and lead out to a small terrace behind the house. These three rooms all got private toilet and shower. The last two rooms share one bathroom. We had actually booked a private bathroom but when we arrive we were told the rooms with private bath were unavailable so we had to use one of the rooms with shared bath. There was actually nobody in the next door room - so we only shared with ourselves but you still had to go out the door to use the shower and bath. After the first night we were able to move to another room with private bathroom.

The room is pretty standard for a Cuban casa - which kind of translate into pretty basic room. There are not much except for the two beds and a couple of small tables which can only be used to leave minor things upon. The bathroom in the second room is quite large. In addition to the basic rooms there are large common areas you can use. In front of our room there are a couple of sort of indoor living rooms with several chairs and a fridge. The fridge sort of function as a mini bar so you can take what you want at prices which is somewhere between the regular shop price and a usual hotel mini bar price.

We didn’t use this indoor common area much - there was no air-condition in these rooms so they tended to be a bit hot and humid. We found the outdoor common areas much more appealing. There are a large area with chair and tables where you can eat lunch and off course there are also several rocking chairs which seem to be a necessity of life on Cuba. There is one additional area where the family liked to hang out often. In this area there are several rocking chairs plus on little swing like seat. Plus there is the local parrot which makes itself heard occasionally.

Like in most casas you can eat both breakfast and dinner here. And considering there are a bit of a walk to the city you might be tempted to eat here at night. Especially after you have discovered the number of mosquitoes which patrols the path between the centre of Playa Larga and the casa at night. If you decide to eat here the dinner is plentiful and quite good - though you can definitely eat cheaper at one of the local restaurants if you want to.

When we arrived we were very much welcomed by the owner and his wife. But as we stay for longer we kind of got the feeling we were walking around looking a bit like big dollar signs - so the host could make money of us. This was particularly the case when we asked for help to arrange a ride to a nearby city - and we were quoted a price which was 4 times what we could arrange ourselves. And when we were about to pay the bill they would charge us high season rate even though we had an email stating the high season didn’t start for another week. In the end we paid the low season rate - but the lady of the house weren’t happy about letting us pay low season rate.
Outdoor area - with rocking chairs.

Congrats on your latest featured review Mickey! hmmm I am not surprised while reading your review even though I didnt get farther than La Havana city I had the impression that they tried to get money in the possible way they could but as Jutta said people living there in general has not easy life and this makes common this kind of situations with the food, the accomodation, everything. In my own experience I needed to find a laundry place so I asked in the hotel I was staying for some help and they said there was none but they suggested me to ask to the lady who cleaned the room if she could help me so at the end she offered herself to take her home the cloths but of course she put the $ in USD dollars and charged us much more money compared to what I would have paid for taking same cloths here to a expensive laundry place but of course there is no comparation is a very different system working there anyway at the end this is is part of the travels! :)

After researching a place for our stay in Playa Larga Cuba, we decided to stay in this guesthouse as it has glowing review from lonely planet guide book and the price also very reasonable for en suite room with air condition. The room cost CUC 25 per night for two people including breakfast.

The review mention that this guesthouse is very close to the beach and actually the beach is in front of the house. Unfortunately the beach is not what we have imagined with white sandy beach and palm trees along the strip. And the lonely planet guide book failed to mention that the beach in front of the house is very dirty with dark sand and rubbish everywhere and crying sea gulls. It is not a good to walk along the beach there.

The house itself is quite large and when we where there, the owner is in the process renovating and rebuilding new and bigger kitchen at the front side of the house and several men working on the project. When we arrived, the owner is very friendly and chatty and showed us the room. Unfortunately after staying for four nights, we are like walking dollars sign to them and they quoted us higher price for their own car act as a taxi, which we can find other car from outside way less than what was quoted.

Also our first room is not en suite even though there is an air condition in the room with one double bed and one single bed, and we were unable to move room as the room were fully book at that day, so we asked to move room the next day as we have pre booked an en suite room through the internet.

The next day we get a room at the back of the house which separated from the main house. The annex where our room located has it is own living room and several chairs and fridge which function as a mini bar. However the price of the food and drink in this guesthouse is higher compare with other shops around or even three star hotel near the beach we went to for lunch and drink. The room itself is very basic and small compare with the first room we had at the main house, it has two beds and a couple of small tables only, but this room has big en-suite bathroom. Luckily hot and cold water working properly with a basic standing shower head and air condition is strong enough to cool the room.

Mostly we have our meals in this guesthouse except when we were out sightseeing. We need to tell the owner in the morning if we want to have dinner inside the house so they can prepare it. Average dinner cost CUC10 per person. The food is delicious and the portion is huge. We can choose the main meat either chicken, pork, fish or lobster. From memory, they charged higher price for lobster. In addition to this, we have soup (usually black bean or red bean soup which I don’t like), rice, vegetables, fried bananas and traditional Cuban dessert. If our order is similar with other guests who staying in this place, we have to share our food, however if our order is different, we have it our self.

The guesthouse also able to make cocktails drink before dinner and it is delicious (I don’t remember how much does it cost, as usually they just write it down and we pay when we check out). Overall, it is nice place but not for longer than two nights stay.
