Casa Argentina Aug 09, 2012
Somewhere on the way I met great guide that was telling me about volunteering organization called Quetzaltrekkers and what they do for street kids in Xela. When I found that they are located in the courtyard of the oldest hostel in town I went straight there.

Casa Argentina is big hostel and whole row of private rooms doubles as living quarters for many Guatemalan high school kids. They have couple of buildings and multiple rooms to choose from including the dorm with the most beds I have ever seen. Most of the beds in the dorm are old single or double beds with colorful covers and feeling of the gypsy caravan. One of the important tasks you should perform when you get here is to check beds and find one that is not too soft or destroyed so that you can sleep well. Also check for the bed bugs and other creatures because too many people pass through this place and there is good possibility that they brought some bugs with them. I did not have any problem with bugs in this place, but I read about experiences of other people in this hostel.

Casa has the cheapest dorm in whole Guatemala and it is only 25Q, which is a bit more than $3. There are no lockers in the dorm, and that is a bit of the problem, especially because the door does not have lock and everyone can get in the place. You could give your valuables to the owner lady and she will keep them in her quarters behind the key, but that is a bit too much trouble.

To get in the hostel you have to ring and wait for someone to open the metal door for you. It is a bit of the hustle to wake up the owners if you want to go out early morning or to get back a bit later. I felt uncomfortable calling the lady every single time I want to get out because there is no regular reception which is strange. Well, they run the place as a family stay-in instead of being for profit hostel, which is in a way very positive, just it is not convenient… Bottom floor has two kitchens that you can use with lots of pots-pans and everything else you would need. Internet is free WiFi all over the bottom area, but you can’t get it in other parts of the hostel. That’s why one of the kitchens is hangout place for most of the people. Bathrooms are a bit sporadic, but there are enough showers and restrooms for everyone, with only two that have steady warm water. They also have some kind of washing place, but it was not really for guests, which does not really matter because there are few great and super cheap washing-drying-folding places in immediate vicinity of the hostel.

Fresh food market is only block away and the center of the town is some 5 blocks from hostel.

In general, it is friendly and nice place, extremely cheap and a bit dirty. Private rooms are totally good and they cost just a bit more money.

Cheap hostel in center of Xela Apr 28, 2011
One of the cheapest places to stay in Xela, probably the best choice for budget backpackers. Located on walking distance of the center(parque central, 5 minutes). Dorms for 20Q and private room for 35Q.
