Old – new place in San Juan del Sur… May 30, 2014
I haven’t been in San Juan for past couple years and I really had fun every time I visit. Last time I spent weeks in Casa Amarilla and enjoyed in incredible hospitality. So, while in Costa Rica, I contacted owner Yaosca and tried to reserve a bed for week-long stay. She was still in the city and she arranged for everything that I need (in a mean time she have a beautiful new baby, got married and opened cool store in the city). On the border I jumped in good old chicken bus towards Rivas and then to another one, hanging from the back door to San Juan del Sur.

Casa was pretty much the same as I remembered from 2011 with a bit more flowers and greenery on the balcony and in the steel bar protected windows. Inside I saw some people that I met in Panama and Costa Rica so it was definitely a place to stay. They got me room in small dorm (one double bed and one queen size) which was totally ok. Dorm is very dark and has only window towards the passage so you will hear everyone that goes to the restroom. It is pretty hot in that room overnight despite few fans that are working. I did sleep mostly in the hammock on the balcony but that is because it was perfect weather and I loved the sea breeze. If you are reserving the private room, take ones that are on the second floor and have bathroom included.

Kitchen is available for all and there are some serious diners going on almost every night. I was there during Papaya season which resulted in bringing gigantic 5kg papayas (cost was only 1.50$ for monstrosity like that) almost every day. Restroom and shower are working fine, but I just wish for one more that is available to all in the house. WiFi is free and readily available.

Inside of the hostel is totally refreshed with different colors, artwork and potted plants. It is even homier than before and that is good thing. They still have lady that cooks and cleans if you want her to do that for you (this is a new lady, Claudia, the old one now works in bakery across the street and makes some good bread). They have only 5 rooms and they are mostly full with people that stay in the area for 3-4 weeks. Freedom is total and you will get your keys for the house doors. You can get really good deals for this rooms if you stay a bit longer. Hostel is located on the entrance to the town with newly fixed road in the front of the building and morning chicken buses that always honk before entering the town at 6 am… Aside of that morning nuisance there is no much noise or disturbance. Plethora of small shops in the area makes sure that you will not go hungry or thirsty at almost any time of the day or night.

Warmly recommended place to stay in San Juan.

Casa Amarilla Apr 03, 2011
Casa Amarilla is small hostel located at the entrance to the San Juan del Sur. It has only tree privates and one dorm like room with four beds. People that own the place also live there, and atmosphere is very family like.

Privates have shared bathroom between them, and when there is water in the city, bathroom is working perfectly fine. Second floor has a nice balcony where you can sit and enjoy in breeze or dry your stuff that you can wash in the back of the hostel. Beds are comfortable and every room has a fan for warm nights. There are many rocking chairs all around the place, and they perfectly go with easy going life in the city. Nice kitchen and refrigerator are available for any culinary adventure you would like to experience. Internet Wifi is available and can be accessed from any of the rocking chairs.

Security is very good with bars and locks on all major entrance points. Most of the people staying here are surfing and boards can be left at the back of the house.

San Juan is pretty small and hostel is just three blocks away from the beach. There are many restaurants at the beach geared towards tourist, but for real experience eat around the market, at the small and cheep local places.

Beach is not clean enough for me, especially because there is river entering the beach area, bringing who knows what kind of pesticides and dirt from surrounding farms. I also read in local newspapers that it is not recommended to swim there… Surrounding area, has amazing beaches, which can be accessed by trucks and surfers vehicles. They charge from $5-$10 depending of the beach where you want to go, which is a bit steep for the service provided, but that is more or less only option.
