Cartagena
Cartagena is a large Caribbean seaport and a popular tourist destination on the north coast of Colombia. Due to its tropical location, Catagena’s climate changes very little, with an average high of 88 °F (31 °C) and low of 75 °F (24 °C) throughout the year.
Cartagena was founded in 1533 by Pedro de Heredia. A few years later, the Spanish constructed a walled fortress to protect them from English, Dutch and French pirates. Its old Walled …

I had wanted to visit Cartagena ever since watching the movie "Romancing the Stone" Now, the movie scenes from Cartagena were actually filmed in Veracruz, Mexico but that did not stop my desire to visit.
I left Indianpolis on the morning of October 2, flying a Northwest DC-9 up to Detroit. I arrived at gate 7 and my connection to Miami was next door. What luck! My next flight was a Northwest Airbus 319. The flights were smo…

My roomies gave me this nickname because I actually went to sleep at 9 p.m. my first night here. Geez! I told them I just got here after a 24 hour bus ride. No excuse apparently. People don´t sleep here, not at night anyway. After landing here and joining a few guys from my room for dinner, I laid down for a nap with the others. They all got up about 11 p.m. to head to the clubs, but I just couldn´t do it with no sleep the night before. So that´s h…

Cartagena is a very beautiful city. The old city is enclosed in thick walls and protected by several old fortresses. In some places the walls are 40 feet thick and 40 feet high. The huge fortress overlooking the city on the hilltop is quite impressive with a labrynth of passageways inside the walls of the fort and great views over the city and ocean. The old city ajoins the new city of high-rise condos and a fancy harbor. The old city is very charming with narrow streets and old crumbling bui…

Wow wow wow... Cartagena has truly lived up to its reputation as a beautiful city. This city is truly unbelievable. As I stroll through the archways and under the butresses of the colonial structures I am constantly awestruck. The lamp lined streets and balconied houses are reminiscient of old Europe. Every few blocks there is a square with a grand statue or two or a plaza surrounded by cafes and people selling local goods.
Cartagena is a mix of flavours though and I …

We set off early this morning for the boat to sail around the Islas del Rosario. They comprose about 33 islands, of which we are not too sure how many we went past and our limited Spanish also meant we had no idea what was happening most of the time anyway!
The trip left (finally) at about 9am, after being told to be there by 7:45am. It was at least 2 hours before we reached the aquarium where we bought tickets. Pretty disappointing for both of us, it cost about $12,000 each which is about $…

Cartagena is very beautiful. It has the old city charm, and the new modern section. People were very nice. It reminded me of Old San Juan in Puerto Rico.

We drove out to Cartagena by bus. This trip takes you through the jungles of Colombia and is not recommended if you are traveling alone. I had no problems but again didn't speak any English on the bus or outside the bus. I actually didn't speck at all because of my English accent. (maybe I'm a little paranoid). It was definitely a pretty drive there and after about 6 hours we arrived in a beach paradise.
Cartagena was beautiful. It is becoming more tourist-y and much safer. The beaches are c…

Hello All,I slept in today, and I feel pretty caught up on sleep. I used today to familiarize myself with the 'Centro' area of town. I walked around for about 30 minutes trying to find my hotel last night before finally stumbling upon it. I grabbed a map from the tourist booth near the clock tower, and then set off exploring.Cartagena is a beautiful walled city on the shore of the Caribbean Sea. The views from the top of the city walls are great, and the old city is filled with old ch…

I had read that Cartagena is a fantastic colonial city, but the descriptions do not give the place justice. Cartagena is quite possibly the most beautiful place i have ever visited. Located on the Caribbean coast, Cartagena was a key port town during the Spanish colonial period. You can still see the remains of the fortified exterior walls lined with canons, which once protected the city from invading pirates. There is a walled in city center that has completely retain…

Colombia, the first country to be visited on our South American tour, and perhaps the most dangerous . . . scared for us yet?!! Nah! For sure, Colombia has been given lots of pretty bad publicity, and so has a very negative rep . . . the drugs, the FARC, the kidnappings . . . But hey, on a positive note, it's also home to the BEST coffee in the world! ;) Is that all?! Of course not! And that's what we intend on discovering during our time here.
First stop, Cartagena, which is located al…

About to board the flight from Bogotá to Cartagena for five days sailing. Las Islas des Rosarios is the plan, wind and waves permitting. So Watch this space.
06 May...
Back from one of the most memorable trips of my life! 4 days with three great friends (and Paddy the Teddy) on the high seas. We explored the wonderful walled city of Cartagena, ate at a few excellent restaurants and climbed aboard my pal's wooden boat and sailed into the sunset (quite literally).
We glided down to Las Isl…
